2006년 외국인 근로자 47만명
말레이시아는 싱가포르와 함께 동남아시아에서 비교적 잘 사는 나라이다. 한국에 동남아 외국인 근로자가 40만 가까이 되듯이, 말레이시아에도 외국인 근로자가 많다.
언어가 같고 지리적으로 가까운 인도네시아 출신 근로자가 그 중 제일 많다. 인도네시아 사람들은 공장 인부는 물론 가정부, 택시 운전사 등 많은 직업을 갖고 있다. 얼마 전 만난 택시 운전사는 “말레이시아에서 15년 가까이 살았는데, 아마 인도네시아 사람들이 일하지 않는다면 말레이시아는 멈출 것이다”라고 장담했다. 그만큼 인도네시아 근로자들이 많이 들어와 일한다는 이야기다.
이외에도 영어가 통하는 필리핀 사람, 서남아시아의 인도, 네팔, 방글라데시 등 많은 나라에서 근로자들이 들어와 일하고 있다. 시내의 콘도미니엄, 어학원 등 국영기관이 아닌 곳의 수위들은 죄다 네팔 등에서 온 외국인으로 채워진 것처럼 보인다.
인도네시아 출신 근로자 33만명
말레이시아 정부 발표 자료에서는, 공식적으로 47만3081명의 외국인 근로자가 말레이시아에서 일하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 인구 3000만이 안 되는 나라에서 47만명이 넘는 외국인 근로자들은 많은 숫자임에 분명하다. 특히 팜오일과 고무농장 코코아 농장 플랜테이션 분야의 외국인 근로자는 내국인 근로자들의 수를 이미 앞질렀다. 이 분야의 말레이시아 근로자는 30만 정도라고 한다. 말레이시아 정부는 이 분야에서 거둬들인 수입의 35%가 외국인 근로자의 월급과 체류 비용 지급으로 들어가 경쟁력이 약화되고 있다고 우려하고 있다.
지난 6월 통계에 의하면 47만 명의 외국인 근로자 중 인도네시아와 인도 출신 근로자는 각각 33만2815명, 2만7273이고 이어 필리핀, 네팔 출신이 뒤를 이었다.
