말레이시아 국민차 프로톤(Proton)이 기술 제휴와 주식 매각 등을 위해 외국 업체들과 협상을 진행 중이다. 주 대상은 독일의 폴스바겐과 프랑스의 푸조다. 특히 폴스바겐과 협상 소식이 알려지면서 11월 초에 프로톤의 주식은 20%가 상승했다.
압둘라 바다위 말레이시아 총리는 9일 프로톤 주식 매각을 위해 외국 업체들과 협상이 진행 중이라고 확인했다. 폴스바겐은 프로톤의 조립라인을 확보하는 대신 프로톤은 판매와 영업을 책임지는 방식으로 협상이 진행 중이다.
프로톤은 생산비 증가와 판매부진, 신차개발 지연으로 말레이시아 자국 시장에서의 점유율도 떨어졌다. 외국 업체들이 동남아시아 시장 접근을 위해서 프로톤과 접촉 횟수를 늘리는 가운데 프랑스 푸조도 지난 9월에 공식 문서를 보내 프로톤과 협력 방안을 논의하자고 제안했다.
