| 이렇게 정리하자. 말레이시아와 전 세계에서는 중요성을 알지만, 우리는 제대로 알지 못한다고. 말레이시아 언론에 하루도 빠지지 않고 등장하는 팜오일에 관한 이야기다. 주가지수와 환율을 전하듯 외신은 매일 팜오일의 시장 가격을 상세히 알린다. 말레이시아는 세계 팜오일 물량의 50% 이상을 공급한다. 지난해 수출액만도 318억 링깃(약 8조6000억원)이었다. 지난해 말레이시아의 팜 나무 재배 면적은 전년도에 비해 2.8%에 상당하는 400만 헥타아르가 늘었다. 버릴 부분이 전혀 없다는 이 열대 식물에 대해 탐색하는 것도 좋을 듯 했다. 그러다가 마침 시간이 났다. 팜 나무 플랜테이션 사업이 왕성하게 펼쳐지는 보르네오 섬을 다녀오기로 마음먹었다. 보르네오 섬 동쪽 끝 농장 이른 아침 쿠알라룸푸르의 저가항공 전용 터미널에서 에어아시아를 탔다. 에어아시아 탑승은 복잡한 수속 절차가 없어 편리하다. 비행기가 제 시간에 출발하지 못하는 경우도 잦다는 단점이 있기는 하다. 2시간 30분 넘게 비행기에 몸을 실었다. 말레이 반도에서 서쪽으로 비행기가 날자, 푸른 바다와 밀림이 1시간 간격을 두고 눈에 들어왔다. 보르네오 섬으로 알려진 사바 주 동쪽 끝 조그만 소도시 ‘따와우’에 에어아시아는 가뿐히 내렸다. 그리고 여객기는 30분도 채 쉬지 못하고 출발했던 쿠알라룸푸르로 되돌아갔다. 하루에 다섯 번 이상씩 저가항공기를 띄우려면 승무원들이 서두르는 수밖에 없을 것이다.  현지인의 안내로 수천만 평이 넘는 팜 나무 농장을 찾았다. 팜 나무들이 사열현장의 군인들처럼 질서정연하게 자리 잡고 있었다. (위 사진 참조) 방금 전 비행기에서 본 구름 아래 펼쳐진 바다 같았다. 노동자들은 주로 인도네시아 출신들로, 이들은 농장에서 숙식을 해결하며 아침 6시부터 오후 3시까지 땀을 흘리고 있었다. 드러난 광대뼈의 색깔만큼이나 마음이 그을려 있을 노동자들의 뒤편으로 팜 농장이 펼쳐져 있었다. 그곳에는 30년을 사는 팜 나무의 인생이 녹아있었다. 흡사 인간의 인생항로로 비슷해 보였다. 팜나무는 묘목 상태에서 3개월을 보호 속에서 자란 뒤, 좀 더 넓은 비닐로 옮겨져 1년 가까이 자라면 농장으로 옮겨진다. 팜 나무를 심는데도 원칙은 있다. 팜 나무는 1 헥타아르에 135 그루만 심어야 한다. 한 그루의 팜 나무가 가지를 뻗고 제대로 자라기 위해서는 30평 정도의 공간이 확보돼야 하기 때문이다. 팜 나무는 대략 수령 3년이 지나면 열매를 맺기 시작한다. 이후 근 25년 동안 열매를 맺으며 왕성한 생산력을 자랑한다. 30년 가까이 열매 수확 가능해 농장 지속적으로 확대돼  20kg이나 되는 열매는 식용유와 바이오 디젤 등 다양한 용도로 가공이 가능한 팜오일을 잔뜩 머금고 있었다. 탐스럽기까지 한 탐오일을 공장(위 사진)에서 고온 처리해 원액을 만든 뒤, 이를 가공하면 식용유가 된다. 메탄올과 첨가제를 넣어 가공하면 바디오 디젤이 만들어진다. 벌목 뒤에 조성되는 팜 나무 농장은 오랑우탄의 서식지를 파괴하는 등 생태계를 파괴한다는 비판이 없는 것도 아니지만, 팜오일은 환경오염을 줄이고 석유를 대체하는 산업으로 말레이시아와 인도네시아 등지에서 각광받고 있는 사업이다. 식물성유지 작물 중 단위면적당 생산량이 가장 뛰어나기 때문이다. ‘말레이시아 팜 오일 위원회’(MPOB)는 “세계 각지의 식물서유지 재배 농지 중 팜 나무 농장의 면적은 4.8%이지만, 전체 식물성유지 생산량에서 차지하는 비중은 35%를 넘는다”며 팜 나무의 탁월한 생산성을 강조한다. 5년이 안 돼 초기 투자비용이 다 회수되기 때문에 임야를 소유하고 있는 현지인들은 기존의 나무들을 없애고 팜 나무를 심는다. 물론 그 배경에는 대체 연료가 개발되기 전까지는 팜오일의 수요가 줄어들지 않을 것이라는 기대가 자리 잡고 있다.  말레이시아 보르네오 섬 일대에 한국산 화학비료를 수출하는 김종화 에버켐 사장은 “팜 나무는 한번 심어두면 25년 이상 수확이 가능해, 팜 나무 플랜테이션은 경제성이 있는 사업이다”며 “말레이시아와 인도네시아 사람들은 팜 나무 농장을 ‘눈에 보이는 오일 공장’으로 여겨 이 사업에 푹 빠져 있다”고 설명했다. 확실치 않는 곳에서 원유 시추선으로 자원 개발을 시도하곤 하는 우리의 처지에서는 부러운 점에 틀림없다. 그런 점에서 ‘오랑우탄이 숨쉴 곳을 빼앗긴다’는 비정부기구 회원들의 항의는 되돌아오지 않은 메아리일 뿐이다. 식재만 하면 한 세대에 걸쳐 부가수입을 올릴 수 있는 사업을 마다할 현지인들은 없다는 의미이기도 하다. 쿠알라룸푸르=박종현 기자 bali@segye.com | |||||||||||
