Malaysians are the number one consumer of seafood in Asia and second in the world.
Each Malaysian consumes an average of 58kg of fish a year. They also consume high quantity of crabs, prawns, snails and shells.
As such, local demand for fish is expected to reach 1.6 million tonnes annually in 2010, Fisheries Department Director General Datuk Junaidi Che Ayub said Friday.
"Malaysians are number one in the consumption of prawns, snails, shells and crabs in Asia. They are number two in the world," Junaidi said.
He said some 1.4 million tonnes of fish were harvested from Malaysian waters in 2004 to meet domestic demand. <Bernama 인용>
