마하티르 모하메드 전 총리가 다시 UMNO 당원이 될 전망이다. 지난 5월 탈당한 지 4개월 만이다. 마하티르 재단과 아들 등 관계자들이 전한 말에 의하면 마하티르는 곧 복당 신청을 할 예정이다. 말레이시아 통신사 버르나마(bernama)가 전한 소식이다.
압둘라 아흐마드 바다위 총리가 야당의 매서운 공격으로 휘청거리는 상황에서 이뤄진 일이다. 압둘라 총리에게 가장 강력한 비판 목소리를 냈던 마하티르 전 총리가 이번에는 총리에게 도움을 주는 상황이 됐다. 
아들인 묵리즈 마하티르(Mukhriz Mahathir)는 17일 아버지의 뜻을 확인했다.
“(아버지의) UMNO 복귀 결심은 순전히 아버지와 신의 뜻에 따른 것이다. 아버지는 복당 신청서를 이들피트리(Aidilfitri, 라마단 끝 무렵의 무슬림 축제)”
현 총리 비판의 선봉에 섰던 마하티르의 복당 신청, 안와르 이브라힘의 정권 인수설, 압둘라 총리의 무기력 방어 등. 말레이시아 정국이 전에 없는 변화의 순간에 들어섰음을 보여주는 징표들이다.
