폴크스바겐, GM 등과 협상에 실패한 프로톤. 이번에 잡은 회사는 네덜란드의 디트로이트 일렉트로닉(Detroit Electric). 이해관계가 일치한다는 게 양사의 입장이다. 양사의 관심이 협력모델을 잉태할지는 지켜볼 일이다. 더구나 숱한 협상실패를 경험한 프로톤의 전례가 있어서 긍정적이지는 않다.
연료비 절감과 탄소 배기량을 줄이면서 경쟁력을 높이려는 프로톤. 동남아 시장을 목표로 ‘전자 차’ 생산지로 말레이시아를 염두에 두고 있는 디트로이트 일렉트로닉. 디트로이트 일렉트로닉의 CEO인 앨버트 램(Albert Lam)는 일단 긍정적인 눈치다. 언론과의 인터뷰에서 속내를 밝혔다. “지난달부터 프로톤과 사전 협상을 가졌으며, 올해 안에 협상을 마무리하겠다”는 게 인터뷰의 요지.
시장 조사결과 시장성과 경제성이 충분하다는 것. 3000만 달러에 이르는 전자차용 배터리 공장을 말레이시아에 설립하길 바라는 눈치다. 협상을 순조롭게 마무리에 2010년쯤에 연간 30000대의 차를 생산하겠다는 게 앨버트 램의 희망이다.
디트로이트 일렉트로닉은 한때 미국 자동차 업계의 상징이었다. 처음으로 전자차를 생산하는 등 1900년대는 업계에서 두드러진 회사였다. 1939년에 파산해 미국을 떠났다. 네덜란드에서 재기의 발판을 마련했다.
4 반세기 전 국민차라는 희망으로 말레이시아에서 탄생한 프로톤 입장에서도 위기돌파와 재기의 기회이다. 프로톤은 최근 몇 년 동안 시장에서 경쟁력을 상실하면서 수차례 협상 대상자를 물색해 왔다. 정부도 외국 유명 자동차 회사와 협력해 대량 생산 등으로 ‘규모의 경제’가 가능할 때 위기를 돌파할 것이라는 입장을 취하고 있다.
