책, 세상을 훔치다/반칠환 글-홍승진 사진/평단/9800원
부제는 ‘우리 시대 프로메테우스 18인의 행복한 책 이야기’ 그 18인은 장영희 고도원 김홍희 김창완 김점선 이어령 장석주 한비야 홍승우 김진애 최희수 김난주 유인촌 백지연 유용주 황주리 박찬욱 김미화이다. 꽤 알려진 이들의 이름이다. 
내가 직접 만난 사람도 제법 있다. 주제도 주제려니와 내용과 형식 모두 편안하게 접하게 구성됐다. 교보문고가 발행하는 월간잡지 <사람과 책>에 연재된 ‘나의 서가 이야기’ 인터뷰 글들을 책이다. 그래서 더 낯설지 않았다. 거개가 읽은 내용일 수도 있었다. 그래도 느낌은 달랐다. 한 사람을 깊게 인터뷰했더라도 한정된 지면에 실을 수밖에 없기에 많은 내용을 담을 수 없다는 한계는 있다. 그래도 충분히 읽을 만한 가치가 있다.
등장하는 인물들은 독서가들답게 확신에 찬 철학들을 갖고 있다. 좋다. 어떤 말은 시어인 듯싶다. 독서를 밥에 비유하기도 하고(고도원), 산소에 비유하기도 (이어령) 한다.
그들의 서재가 독자들에게는 ‘꿈’을 주면서 동시에 ‘좌절’을 줄 수도 있겠다. 그들의 작업 공간이면서 독서의 공간이 서재가 주는 분위기와 느낌을 두고 하는 말이다. 하지만 자신의 분야에서 무엇인가를 이룬 이들이 쌓아놓은 성과를 인정하는 독자라면 좌절보다는 꿈과 희망을 먼저 이야기할 테지. 나도 그렇다. 부럽다는 말이다. 다만 하나 더. 글과 사진으로 보이는 그들이 진정 행복을 느끼고, 그 상큼한 바이러스를 보다 많이 전이시켰으면 싶다.

“독서란 한마디로 산소입니다. 독서를 안 하는 사람은 하느님이 주신 풍부한 산소를 마시지 않고 숨을 안 쉬겠다고 주장하는 것과 같습니다. 특히 정치인이나 경제인이 책을 읽지 않는다면 그 삶의 불행이 아니라 그 사회의 불행입니다.” (이어령)

푸름이 엄마 신영일씨는 자리에 앉자마자 ‘푸름이 독서 발달 4단계’를 설명해 준다.
“먼저 1단계(0세~12세)는 책과 친숙해지는 시기입니다. 입으로 빨고, 물고 찢고, 집어던지면서 책과 친해져요. 2단계(12개월~18개월)는 그림책을 다양하게 보여주는 시기입니다. 사물 인지를 많이 시켜주는 게 중요해요. 3단계(18개월~36개월)는 동화책을 읽어주고 한글을 깨우치게 하는 시기입니다. 4단계(36개월~50개월)는 독립적으로 책을 읽어야 할 시기입니다.” (푸름이 닷컴 대표 최희수)

‘삶이 문학이다’라고 할 때 그 말이 저이처럼 자연스럽게 어울리는 사람도 드문 듯하다. 저이의 글은 책상물림의 글이 아니다. 삶과 문학이 따로국밥인 사람들과는 체질이 다르다. 저이의 문학은 근육과 핏줄의 문학이요, 땀의 문학이다. 쩨쩨하고 옹졸한 것과는 거리가 멀다. 다소 목소리 커도 통 큰 말씀을 동경한다. 저이의 전력 가운데 하나가 목수였듯이 저이의 시와 산문은 건축물처럼 보인다. 저이의 문학은 유약한 펜이 아니라 꽝꽝 대못을 때려 박는 튼튼한 집짓기처럼 보인다. (유용주)
